One thing is certain in the rural Maasai community of Osupuko, Kenya: There is not enough water anymore and what remains is making children sick. As the climate changes, this once lush community is drying up. Month after month the rains don’t fall. Animals are dying and people are left to suffer with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Women and girls whose task it is to collect water for their families now find themselves having to walk for days to find any. Maasai Community Connection has helped deliver aid to the area, but relief is not a sustainable answer. We are working with community members to bring clean and accessible drinking water to help combat the effects of climate change. Through a combination of tapping underground reserves and storing rain water, our research shows that bringing clean water to the families of Osupuko will save lives of children and the elderly, help prevent waterborne illnesses, increase school attendance and free women and girls from backbreaking, time consuming labor. |
