A great number of Maasai adults never had the opportunity to go to or finish school as children. People like Lorna, she was forced to marry at an early age she never went to school, but she didn’t give up. As an adult she and her peers in the community of Namuncha, Kenya, took matters into their own hands. They started an adult literacy program by hiring a local teacher and holding classes under a tree. Recently, Maasai Community Connection partnered with students to construct a school building and paying salaries of the teaching staff. This allows all adults, regardless of gender, age or religion to attend classes for free. Classes are taught in the Maasai language of Maa. The curriculum is designed by students and staff to fit their needs. What the adult literacy program has done is give students the knowledge to navigate in the 21st century while maintaining a strong connection to their cultural heritage. |
